Through dramatic monologue Anne expresses her true feelings to the audience. ââ¬ËAm I Black or white?ââ¬â¢ The repetitive chant of ââ¬Ëwho do you think you are?ââ¬â¢ of various white and black choices captures Anne SANDY ââ¬ËHiding Sandyââ¬â¢ (p3) Repetitive chorus of ââ¬ËAlways on the runââ¬â¢ to emphasize Sandyââ¬â¢s lack of identity and security and struggle to have a stable sense of his own identity ââ¬â where he belongs, who he belongs to. ââ¬ËSandyââ¬â¢s Story of the Mungeeââ¬â¢ (p10) Sandyââ¬â¢s story is an allegory in the oral tradition for the Stolen Generation. The ââ¬ËMungeeââ¬â¢ turned into pale skin and that was his punishment. People would know. People would never forget . Sandy has culture. He uses stories as a way of coping with bad circumstances. That bit of red desertâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢m going to catch that fishââ¬â¢ Sandy is finally at peace with where he is, who he is, what he is doing. The ââ¬Ëbit of red desertââ¬â¢ symbolizes home and belonging, his very identity. ââ¬ËCatching the fishââ¬â¢ symbolizes his capacity to stop running ââ¬â heââ¬â¢s now in control, not the authorities! SHIRLEY ââ¬ËShirley knits for familyââ¬â¢ (p19) Stage directions in performance: ââ¬ËShirley has big bag of knitting that she lays out-from small to largeââ¬â¢. The clothes symbolize all the years her children were stolen; sheââ¬â¢s still their mother. A piece is missing or fractured in her identity. ââ¬ËShirley Never Gives Up Searchingââ¬â¢ The repetition Shirleyââ¬â¢s voice asking after her children is enhanced by the lighting, where she is ââ¬Ëisolated, spotlitââ¬â¢. The dramatic techniques highlight her emotional anguish and the fact she is suffering, all alone, with no support. Until she is re-united with her children, her identity is a perpetual. ââ¬ËShirleyââ¬â¢s Come Full Circleââ¬â¢ The dramatic monologue is powerful because the audience gets an insight into Shirleyââ¬â¢s full range of emotions.
